Coffee Found to Have a Mental Health Benefit

July 17, 2025  19:20

Caffeine may help prevent depression caused by chronic stress by influencing the gut-brain connection, according to scientists from Chongqing Medical University in China. The study was published in the European Journal of Pharmacology (EJP).

In an experiment involving laboratory mice, researchers simulated chronic stress — known for inducing behavioral changes similar to depressive symptoms in humans. One group of mice received caffeine beforehand, and their behavior, gut condition, and inflammation levels were then compared with those of mice exposed to stress without any intervention.

The results were striking: mice that received caffeine behaved as actively as the control group that was not exposed to stress. They maintained interest in sweetened water, did not lose body weight, and showed no signs of depressive behavior. Additionally, these mice showed no damage to the intestinal barrier, and levels of inflammatory molecules in their blood and hippocampus — the brain region associated with mood — remained normal. The levels of proteins responsible for maintaining the integrity of the gut lining did not decrease, and their gut microbiota remained similar to that of healthy individuals.

The authors emphasize that the study is still preliminary. It points to a preventive effect — it remains unclear whether caffeine can alleviate existing depression. However, the findings support the importance of further research into the links between diet, gut microbiota, and mental health.
