Brazilian orthopedic surgeon Daniel Oliveira has urged people to give up the habit of sleeping on their stomach, as it may lead to neck and back pain, Terra reports.
According to the doctor, when a person sleeps on their stomach, the neck remains in a rotated position, creating excessive strain on the cervical spine. This can result in pain, restricted mobility, and nerve compression.
“There is also increased pressure on the lower back, which raises the risk of tingling in the arms upon waking and a general feeling of discomfort in the morning,” the doctor explained.
In addition, sleeping face down makes breathing more difficult and increases pressure on internal organs. Stomach sleeping is especially risky for people with herniated discs, osteoarthritis, breathing problems, or circulatory disorders. Sleeping on the back or side is also recommended for pregnant women and those recovering from surgery.
“Your sleeping position has a direct impact on spinal health. Even small changes in sleep habits can play a major role in preventing pain and injury,” Oliveira noted.
