A new long-term study has shown that increasing daily physical activity may help slow early brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers followed nearly 300 older adults for 14 years and found that people who already had high levels of beta-amyloid — an early marker of Alzheimer’s — experienced slower memory and cognitive decline if they were physically active. Even small or moderate amounts of daily movement made a difference, according to the study.
The research revealed that adults who walked between 5,000 and 7,500 steps a day experienced cognitive decline at half the rate of those who were mostly inactive.
Interestingly, additional increases in activity brought little extra benefit — suggesting that people don’t need to reach the often-cited goal of 10,000 steps a day to see results.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, also found that exercise did not slow the buildup of beta-amyloid. Instead, it was linked to a slower accumulation of tau, another toxic brain protein believed to play a direct role in cell damage.
Today, nearly 7 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease, a number expected to double by 2060. Although two drugs — Leqembi and Kisunla — are currently available to slow the disease’s progression, doctors emphasize that lifestyle habits such as physical activity remain vital.
Since the study was purely observational, it does not prove that exercise directly prevents Alzheimer’s.
However, experts say it adds to growing evidence that movement is a “modifiable risk factor” — something people can change to support better brain health.
