UA: An Expensive Toothbrush Doesn’t Clean Better

Dutch periodontist Tima Tomassen has found that maintaining healthy teeth depends far more on simple daily habits than on pricey devices. He analyzed dozens of clinical studies, compared the effectiveness of different types of toothbrushes, and examined how brushing duration affects the condition of teeth and gums, according to the University of Amsterdam (UA).

Today, oral diseases — tooth decay and gum inflammation — affect nearly 3.5 billion people. Dental plaque is usually the main underlying cause, which is why regular brushing remains a key recommendation from dentists. But what does it actually mean to “brush your teeth well”?

Tomassen discovered that popular beliefs about the importance of advanced technologies are greatly overstated. According to him, the real-life difference between various types of electric toothbrushes is minimal, which means the main factor is not the device, but the person using it.

The researcher confirmed that electric toothbrushes do remove plaque better than manual ones. However, the difference between the two main types — oscillating-rotating and sonic — is nearly negligible. In Tomassen’s view, manufacturers should focus less on creating ever-more expensive models and more on affordable designs and educational programs that help people improve their brushing technique.

He also analyzed recommendations issued by dental associations in different countries. Only one-third of these organizations provide clear and detailed instructions for oral care. Tomassen stressed that accessible, practical guidance is essential for successful prevention. He advocates for creating a national, evidence-based system of recommendations tailored to different age groups, social conditions, and financial situations.

Such a guideline is already in development, and Tomassen intends to participate in the effort, hoping that his research will help bridge the gap between scientific evidence and everyday dental practice.
