Doctor Outlines Key Longevity Principles for Different Stages of Life

January 20, 2026  10:51

Building muscle mass in your 30s and undergoing regular health screenings in your 40s are among the most important strategies for long-term health and longevity, according to Dr. Ian K. Smith of the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He shared his recommendations in an interview with the Daily Mirror.

Dr. Smith explained that the first metabolic changes begin to appear in the body during one’s 30s, although the body is still highly resilient to aging. As a result, prevention becomes the main focus at this stage of life. He advises adopting a diet rich in lean protein, plant-based foods, and healthy fats, reducing ultra-processed foods, and maintaining a consistent exercise routine. Gaining and preserving muscle mass in this decade, he noted, significantly lowers the risk of health problems later in life.

In the 40s, the focus shifts from building reserves to protecting them. During this period, Smith recommends paying closer attention to nutrition, training more mindfully to avoid injuries, and scheduling regular medical checkups. Early detection of health issues at this age, he emphasized, can be critical.

By the 50s, muscle loss accelerates, inflammation increases, and the risk of chronic diseases rises. Therefore, the priority becomes maintaining overall resilience rather than simply managing weight. The doctor suggests increasing the intake of healthy fats and plant-based foods, as well as placing special emphasis on mobility and flexibility exercises.

After the age of 60, the primary goal is preserving independence. According to Dr. Smith, regular movement, sustained physical activity, and targeted cognitive training help maintain quality of life and self-sufficiency for as long as possible.
