German Scientists Develop Method to Detect Heart Disease Through the Skin

Researchers in Germany have created a non-invasive method for early detection of cardiovascular diseases, allowing problems in the blood vessels to be identified before any symptoms appear. The fast-RSOM technology visualizes the tiniest blood vessels and evaluates their function without injections, catheters, or other interventions. The results were published in the journal Light: Science & Applications (LS&A).

The method detects subtle changes in the skin’s microvasculature, particularly endothelial dysfunction — the ability of blood vessels to constrict and expand. Such impairments are among the earliest indicators of potential cardiovascular problems, but until now, they were nearly impossible to measure directly. Fast-RSOM allows assessment of capillary health even before symptoms occur.

Experiments showed that the technology can identify microvascular deterioration linked to smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and other risk factors. Unlike traditional approaches, which assess risk indirectly, fast-RSOM demonstrates real structural and functional changes in real time.

The researchers believe the device could become an effective preventive tool, helping doctors more accurately identify people at higher risk, monitor the effectiveness of treatments, and evaluate lifestyle changes. Thanks to its compact design and non-invasive nature, the technology could be used in standard clinics for regular preventive screenings in the future.
