A new study has shown that two abilities at the core of human thinking may be embedded in the brain from a very early age.
The findings were published in the journal Communications Biology.
The research focuses on language and the so-called “theory of mind” — the ability to understand the thoughts, intentions, feelings, and inner states of other people. Scientists concluded that these complex cognitive systems develop separately in the brain almost from the very beginning of life.
The study was conducted by researchers from Ohio State University. They used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe brain activity in children aged three to nine. During the experiment, children listened to speech, stories, and watched cartoons, while specialists tracked which areas of the brain were activated in response.
It turned out that the regions responsible for language and those associated with understanding others’ emotions and intentions hardly overlap.
What especially surprised the scientists was how early this separation appears. According to neuropsychologists, it seems as though the human brain is initially “wired” for two distinct types of thinking: linguistic communication and social understanding of others. Researchers suggest that this structure may have formed deep in human evolutionary history.
The authors also examined patterns of neural connectivity — how different brain regions interact with each other at rest. They found that language and social networks are not only located in different parts of the brain but are also connected differently to other neural systems. This challenges the old hypothesis that language and understanding other minds arise from a single cognitive mechanism.
Interestingly, in adults these systems begin to interact much more closely. Scientists believe that with age, language and social thinking increasingly work together. This may explain why adults are better at recognizing sarcasm, hidden meanings, deception, and subtle emotional nuances in conversation.
