“Smart bubbles” could transform the treatment of cancer and heart disease

Scientists at the University of Central Florida have developed a technology they describe as “smart tiny bubbles.” The innovation is based on exosomes — microscopic vesicles that cells naturally use to exchange signals, according to Medical Xpress.

Researcher Dinender Singla has turned them into what he calls “biological drones” capable of delivering drugs directly to targeted areas of the body.

Exosomes are about 500 times thinner than a human hair. Scientists have learned how to load them with therapeutic compounds and coat their surface with special cellular markers. These markers act like address labels, guiding the exosomes precisely to damaged tissues such as tumors or diseased areas of the heart.

The main goal of the technology is to dramatically improve treatment precision while reducing toxicity. Today, many patients must take high doses of medication because only a fraction of the drug actually reaches its target. The new approach could make it possible to use much lower doses.

The results have been especially promising in cancer and cardiovascular disease research. Singla’s team tested the technology against triple-negative breast cancer — one of the most aggressive forms of the disease.

In laboratory experiments, the exosomes successfully delivered anti-cancer drugs to tumor cells while reducing heart damage, a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Researchers also used exosomes to transport anti-inflammatory drugs directly to damaged heart tissue. In essence, the technology aims to solve two major challenges in modern medicine at once: destroying tumors while protecting the body from the severe side effects of treatment.

The technology is currently being prepared for manufacturing and future clinical trials.
