No Cases of West Nile Virus Reported in Armenia, Says National Center for Disease Control and Prevention

No cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported in Armenia so far, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) of the Ministry of Health told NEWS.am Medicine.

"If there had been imported cases, they would have been officially registered. At present, we have no such cases. Surveillance has also been conducted among mosquito vectors, but the virus has not been detected," the NCDC said.

The Center noted that West Nile virus is present in certain regions of Europe where the disease is endemic, but those areas are not directly connected to Armenia.

As previously reported, several European countries have recorded locally acquired cases of West Nile virus infection. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), locally transmitted cases have been confirmed this transmission season in Greece, Italy, Spain, Romania, and North Macedonia.

Experts at the ECDC note that the spread of the virus depends on weather conditions, mosquito populations, and bird migration patterns. European public health authorities therefore issue regular surveillance updates and advise people to take precautions against mosquito bites.

It should be recalled that in 2024, Armenia recorded 132 cases of West Nile fever, including four fatalities. During 2025, two cases were reported, while in 2026, no cases of the disease have been recorded to date.

West Nile fever is a viral disease that is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. It is not spread from person to person. Approximately 80% of infected individuals remain asymptomatic, while 18–19% develop a moderate form of the disease. In about 1% of cases, the infection can lead to involvement of the central nervous system.
