Is the Benefit of Vitamin C Proven Again? Scientists Find a Link to Lower Blood Pressure

March 6, 2026  14:58

A study published in the scientific journal Food & Function (F&F) confirms a link between Vitamin C supplementation and lower blood pressure in adults. Researchers analyzed data from 17 randomized clinical trials to evaluate the actual effectiveness of this popular vitamin.

Key Study Takeaways

The analysis revealed that Vitamin C affects blood pressure readings unevenly:

  • Systolic ("Top Number") Pressure: Dropped by an average of 3.7 mmHg. This metric records the pressure in the arteries during a heart contraction.
  • Diastolic ("Bottom Number") Pressure: No significant overall reduction was found across the general participant pool.
  • Special Group: For individuals with diabetes, a decrease in diastolic pressure was observed—averaging 2.3 mmHg.

Should You Reach for Supplements?

Despite the optimistic figures, the study's authors urge caution. The current level of evidence is considered limited for several reasons:

  1. Larger participant samples are required for more definitive results.
  2. Longer-term observations are needed to assess the lasting impact.
  3. Vitamin supplements are not a substitute for primary medical therapy prescribed by a doctor.

Crucial Note: While a drop of a few points may seem minor, on a population-wide scale, such changes can significantly improve overall cardiovascular health statistics.
