Scientists Discover Benefits of Matcha for the Brain and Gut

May 20, 2026  22:24

Researchers from Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences have concluded that matcha, a traditional Japanese powdered green tea, may provide a wide range of health benefits. The review was published in the journal Nutrients.

Matcha differs from regular green tea because of its unique cultivation process. Tea plants are shaded before harvest, which increases the levels of chlorophyll, caffeine, L-theanine, and antioxidants in the leaves. The leaves are then finely ground into powder, helping preserve their bioactive compounds.

According to the researchers, catechins and polyphenols found in matcha may have positive effects on blood sugar levels, fat metabolism, body weight, and gut microbiota.

The scientists also found evidence suggesting that matcha could support brain function and nervous system health. Some studies further point to the tea’s potential anti-cancer properties.

Particular attention was given to EGCG, one of the main antioxidants in green tea. Previous research has shown that this compound may help reduce inflammation and protect cells from oxidative stress.

In addition, the L-theanine contained in matcha may promote relaxation, lower stress levels, and improve concentration and focus.

Earlier studies also suggested that Chinese kuding tea may help protect against gout and kidney disease.
