Why you should drink less coffee during periods

Every woman goes through menstruation but the pain and stress they go through are different for everyone. One of the symptoms that is quite commonly seen in women during periods is abdominal pain and headache. The abdominal pain is caused due to muscle contractions and use of hot water pack and drinking hot water is known to act as a natural remedy to deal with period pain. However, the drastic changes in the hormones during menstruation can also lead to a headache. Drinking too much of coffee during those days might lead to dehydration. This is because, coffee contains caffeine, which is diuretic in nature. It not only increases the urine production but also contributes to cramps leading to dehydration. If you suffer from dehydration, it can trigger a headache. Moreover, coffee also wreaks havoc with the hormones. It restricts blood vessels, increases anxiety and also heightens cortisol, which further exacerbates the menstrual symptoms. Here are few home remedies to beat pain during your periods.

Drinking a cup or two of coffee in a day is not a cause for concern. However, if you are the one who needs a cuppa every 2 – 3 hours or drink more than 4 cups of coffee in a day, then you need to cut it down. Instead, replace coffee with green tea, which is known to ease abdominal pain during periods. But if you can’t think of starting the day without taking a sip of coffee, then beware that the symptoms of menstruation might become worse as it does more harm than good.
