Being addicted to the smartphone can lead to obesity. According to a study conducted by Simon Bolivar University (Colombia), those who spend five or more hours a day on smartphones increase the risk of obesity by 43%.
A total of 1,000 students were observed from June to December 2018 within the study. It turned out that many hours of using a smartphone increases the likelihood that a person will consume sweetened beverages and fast food more often. In addition, dependence on gadgets significantly reduces physical activity.
About 25% of overweight subjects and almost 5% of those with obesity, were given to smartphones for more than five hours a day. At the same time, women who spent more than five hours a day in front of mobile devices were twice as likely to be overweight than men.
Scientists attribute this to the fact that dependence on smartphones provokes a sedentary lifestyle. Meanwhile, reduced physical activity increases the risk of premature death, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
