Snakes may be original source for Chinese coronavirus

January 23, 2020  14:59

Snakes may be the original source for the Chinese coronavirus 2019-nCoV, which has already killed 17 people, South China Morning Post reported.

After studying the genetic code of the virus, experts found that the closest to it are the genetic codes of two species of snakes - the Many-banded krait and Chinese cobra.

Since eating snakes is quite common in China, this version seems very plausible, but there is no consensus on this issue in the scientific community. Some scientists claim that the seafod is the original source of the virus.

A total of 17 people have already died due to this coronavirus, and there are almost 600 confirmed cases of infection. The disease was initially registered only in the Chinese city of Wuhan, which is now quarantined. However, now cases of the disease have been detected in other cities of China, as well as in Japan, Thailand, the USA, South Korea and other countries.
