COVID-19 vaccine efficacy may depend on person's weight, study claims

March 3, 2021  23:29

The effectiveness of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine may be influenced by a person's weight, The Independent reported noting that overweight and obese people may face reduced protection from the vaccine.

Italian researchers tested the presence of antibodies in humans after two doses of BNT162b2 were given 21 days apart. 158 women and 90 men aged 23-69 received the vaccine. All developed an immune response after vaccination. However, scientists have noted a correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the presence of antibodies. People with lower body weight showed a stronger immune response. High concentrations of antibodies have also been observed in young men and women.

According to experts, it is possible that overweight people will have to inject a large dose of the vaccine to achieve the desired effect.
