How can foil protect against bacterial infections?

July 12, 2021  21:20

Coating frequently used surfaces in hospitals with silver foil significantly reduces bacterial contamination, the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases reported.

As part of the study, Professor Andreas Widmer and his colleagues from the university in Switzerland evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of polyvinyl chloride foil with an integrated agent containing 2% silver ions.

The levels of contamination on foil-coated surfaces were found to be significantly lower than on uncoated surfaces. Overall, the average microbial count was reduced by more than 60 times, while the average bioburden on untreated control surfaces was three times higher than on antimicrobial foil.

The team also found that clinically important bacteria, particularly enterococci, were significantly less likely to be present on foil-covered surfaces. Moreover, the antimicrobial effect was still maintained 6 months later.
