Russian scientists create fast way to diagnose Alzheimer's disease

July 1, 2024  20:02

Scientists from Perm Polytechnic have created a fast way to diagnose Alzheimer's disease at various stages of its development.

The scientists' development makes it possible to diagnose the disease when it can still be slowed down or prevented. The method is based on the data of magnetic susceptibility of brain veins, and the development has already been granted a patent, writes the portal "Scientific Russia".

Magnetic susceptibility (MS) of brain veins is a physical quantity that characterizes the thickness of veins. This characteristic can be determined with the help of a contrast agent and a magnetic resonance study of a certain type (a special mode and power of the MRI unit are required).

"We analyzed the data of 81 patients who consented to the publication of their medical information and found that there are two veins that are the most informative. Namely, the basal veins and the thalamic veins in the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This was previously unknown. This is the first fundamental difference between our method and the existing ones," shared Alexander Alexeev, head of the department of organization of scientific research.

"The second important difference: having a tomographic image, we look not at a specific value of magnetic susceptibility, which is measured by a number, for example, 178, but at the category of this index - low, medium or high. And then by the set of values of the MV thalamic vein and basal vein in the left and right hemispheres, we consistently determine their combination and the qualitative state of the brain, which corresponds to the three possible values of the root of decision making, "- added the scientist.

Only 5% of cases will require additional research, respectively, in 95% of cases the diagnosis will be made with the help of the decision root. Polytechnics have developed a special table. The doctor, analyzing the MRI indicators, determines the category of magnetic susceptibility (1 - small, 2 - medium, 3 - high) in each of the four veins. A combination of four digits is obtained, which remains to be decoded according to a ready-made simple algorithm. This is how the final value is obtained. But the final diagnosis is still made by a doctor, since the method is probabilistic in nature, and its reliability is 78%.
