Russian scientists propose new approach to HIV infection treatment

July 20, 2021  12:38

Russian scientists have proposed a new highly effective approach to the treatment of HIV infection.

According to RIA Novosti, it is currently impossible to completely recover from this HIV infection, and patients have to take medications throughout their lives.

At the same time, the risk of unwanted side effects increases, because the vast majority of treatment regimens include tenofovir, which is toxic to the kidneys and causes a decrease in bone density.

The new treatment method developed by Russian scientists implies a transition from a triple treatment system to a double one. The first six months of therapy includes tenofovir, and then patients exclude it and take dolutegravir and emtricitabine.

Six months after the start of treatment, patients develop their own immune response against HIV, and the remaining components reinforce each other. In this regard, a dual therapy regimen is sufficient to completely suppress the virus and has neither immediate nor delayed toxicity.
