First aid tips for bleeing

August 27, 2014  22:46

You’ve childproofed your home and you have your first-aid kit. What could possibly go wrong? A lot if you don’t know how to use what are in the kit and how to administer first aid, Medical Observer warns. Here are some tips to help treat common, minor problems.

Wounds/Cuts

Here’s how to care for minor wounds:

• Stop the bleeding by applying pressure with a clean, absorbent cloth.

• If the blood soaks through, apply a second bandage on top.

• If bleeding still doesn’t stop, raise the wound above heart level.

• Once bleeding stops, clean the wound gently with soap and water.

• Apply an antibiotic ointment.

• Wrap the wound firmly (not so tight as to cut off circulation) in a cloth or a bandage.

Nosebleeds are common and usually happen after your child has been exposed to too much sun.

• Have your child sit upright to reduce blood pressure in the veins of the nose to discourage further bleeding.

• Pinch your child’s nose using your thumb and index finger. Let him or her breathe through the mouth. Continue the pinch for 5 to 10 minutes.

• You can also try placing an ice pack on the bridge of the nose.

• To prevent re-bleeding, tell your child not to pick or blow the nose. Avoid bending for several hours.

Seek medical care immediately if:

• The bleeding lasts for more than 20 minutes.

• The nosebleed follows an accident, a fall, or an injury to the head, including a punch in the face that may have broken the nose.
