Specialist says vaccination is not enough to stop coronavirus

February 11, 2022  13:45

Vaccination alone is not enough to stop the coronavirus pandemic and this makes the current pandemic different from all previous pandemics, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Alexander Butenko said.

According to the specialist, pandemics similar to the current one have not been seen in the entire history of mankind.

"There was smallpox, but it was eliminated with a very effective vaccine; the polio epidemic was stopped all over the world with a live trivalent injection, which gave complete protection. COVID-19 has a slightly different combination of factors - vaccination and created collective immunity," said the virologist.

In a conversation with Ura.ru, the specialist noted that various new strains of the coronavirus will still continue to emerge, making it possible for people to develop collective immunity, which, when combined with the vaccine, will provide immunity to the dominant variants of the infection.
