New technology may replace biopsy

March 30, 2022  20:55

Researchers from Colombia have developed technology that could replace biopsy and histology with real-time imaging.

The study was described in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.

The specialists created a special high-speed 3D microscope, the MediSCAPE, capable of visualizing tissue images, which is important for oncologists and surgeons working with cancer. With this device, specialists will be able to examine tumors immediately, without the need to cut out pieces of tissue and then wait for the results of histological analysis.

The new development will not only eliminate the long waiting time for tests, but it will also allow them to examine tissue from the spinal cord, brain, nerves, eyes, and facial areas.

Similar microscopes already exist, but they provide only small 2D images, making it difficult to quickly examine large areas of tissue and interpret the results. They also require a fluorescent dye to be injected into the patient, which also causes additional difficulties in the work. The new technology, on the other hand, has none of these disadvantages.
