Five warning signs of diabetes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 122 million Americans have diabetes. Many people don't know they have elevated blood glucose levels until they are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, writes Eat This, Not That!

Experts have listed five warning signs of diabetes.

Persistent infections and slow healing of wounds can be signs of type 2 diabetes. In particular, women may have frequent vaginal yeast infections and/or bladder infections. This is because bacteria can thrive when blood glucose levels are high.

Blurred vision, especially after eating, can be a symptom of diabetes. High blood sugar levels can cause fluid movement in and out of the eye, often leading to swelling of the lens of the eye.

Constant hunger can also be a sign of type 2 diabetes, doctors warn. This is because your muscles are not getting the energy they need from food, the body's insulin resistance prevents glucose from reaching your muscles and providing energy.

Frequent going to the bathroom, especially at night, are a sign of high blood sugar levels.

Diabetes forces the kidneys to work harder to remove excess sugar from the blood. When the kidneys fail, the excess sugar gets into the urine, leading to more frequent urination.

Unexplained skin changes should also not be ignored. Diabetes can cause dark, velvety patches of skin in the folds of the neck, armpits, or groin due to excess insulin in the blood.
