Researchers name oats that help lose weight almost like Ozempic

July 25, 2024  10:17

Scientists from the University of Arkansas studied different types of natural fibers whose inclusion in the diet contributes to weight loss and healthy sugar levels in the body. The respective research was published in the Journal of Nutrition.

The team looked at dietary fiber variants such as wheat dextrin, pectin, resistant starch, beta-glucans, and cellulose found in plant foods.

The researchers fed lab mice a diet containing different types of fiber and monitored their body weight, fat content, blood sugar levels, and gut bacteria.

Experiments showed that oat and barley beta-glucans were the only types of fiber that increased the number of beneficial Ilebacterium bacteria in the digestive system, leading to increased body energy expenditure and weight loss.

Intestinal butyrate concentrations also increased in rodents on a beta-glucan diet. Butyrate releases glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a naturally occurring protein similar in action to Ozempic and some other semaglutide drugs that stimulate insulin production.

"Part of the benefits of consuming dietary fiber is through the release of GLP-1 and other gut peptides that regulate appetite and body weight," the researchers explained.
