Scientists find new way to treat allergies

Scientists have presented a new way to treat allergies based on specific immune B-cells. An article by researchers from the Paul Ehrlich Institute and Justus Liebig University in Giessen was published in the journal Allergy.

For this purpose, the specialists studied undifferentiated B-cells of mice and humans in cell cultures. They created a hybrid protein, rFlaA: Betv1, composed of flagellin and birch allergen, which was able to trigger mTOR-dependent and MyD88-dependent differentiation of B cells. MTOR is a key regulatory protein in cellular metabolism, and the MyD88 protein serves to transmit signals within immune cells. It is the ability of flagellin proteins to trigger such a process that accounts for the immunity's suppression of the allergic reaction.

The discovery is planned to be used in allergen-specific immunotherapy. For example, rFlaA: Betv1 will induce the maturation of B-cells, which, in turn, will counteract allergic reactions by releasing various substances.
