Alzheimer's Care Armenia launches Alzheimer's Disease Early Detection Program in Armenia

ALZHEIMER’S  CARE  ARMENIA  LAUNCHES   EARLY  DETECTION MEMORY  PROGRAM  FOR  ALZHEIMER’S  IN ARMENIA  FUNDED BY  DAVOS  ALZHEIMER’S  COLLABORATIVE (DAC)

[San Clemente, California] (November 1, 2022) – Alzheimer’s Care Armenia is thrilled to announce the Brain Health Armenia Project which is a multidisciplinary country-wide mobile memory screening and Alzheimer’s disease training program in Armenia. The project collaborates with the Armenian EyeCare Project to provide cognitive screening throughout Armenia and is endorsed by the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Health.  

The Brain Health Armenia Project‘s team includes primary care physicians, nurses, psychologists and social workers who provide didactic and hands-on training to healthcare professionals and family caregivers to improve the care of the person with dementia in Armenia. In addition to Dr. Mahakian leading the team, Dr. Samson Khachatryan, Chairman, Department of Neurology, National Institute of Health, Armenia and Dr. Gevorg Pashikyan, Geriatric Psychiatrist serve as clinical consultants.

Phase 1 of the project launched June 1st for one year and has already conducted over 2000 early detection memory screenings and has trained over 350 primary care physicians and nurses on early detection and Alzheimer’s disease. The memory screening has revealed a significant prevalence of cognitive impairment among those people screened.  The project is making a sustainable impact by training and educating healthcare professionals and increasing visibility and awareness about Alzheimer’s disease throughout Armenia.  “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to develop this groundbreaking and sustainable project that will improve the care of people with dementia with the intent of incorporating cognitive screenings as a standard of medical care throughout Armenia,” said Dr. Jane Mahakian, Gerontologist and Founder of Alzheimer’s Care Armenia. The project is finalizing Phase 2 plans for expanding the project to include a groundbreaking country-wide in-home health care program that includes palliative and end of life care for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.  

People want to care for their loved ones in their home and this innovative program will improve the quality of care and life of the their loved one. We are thrilled to have Nancy Barsamian, BSN on our team who will oversee the palliative and end of life care division of the program.  Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise in Armenia and Alzheimer’s Care Armenia is leading the way to make systemic changes that will improve the care of the person with dementia and support for their families.

Alzheimer’s Care Armenia (ACA) was founded in 2017 by gerontologist Dr. Jane Mahakian with the purpose of raising awareness and developing sustainable programs and services for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families in Armenia. ACA is located in San Clemente, California. It is a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization in the State of California and is an NGO in Armenia. Dr. Mahakian is a pioneer in bringing elder care programs and increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s disease in Armenia. She is author of “I hear you” a practical guide for people caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease that promotes purposeful living and preserves independence.
