Is white rice good or bad?

November 16, 2022  12:13

White rice is often referred to as "bad carbohydrates" because it is heavily processed with the removal of outer husks, bran and germ, which deprives it of fiber and some of its nutrients.

But should we abandon white rice altogether and declare it a bad food?

The medical experts at Eat This, Not That! note that eating white rice can have "several unexpected side effects," both good and not so good.

More energy

Even after processing, white rice retains some fiber and also contains important vitamins and minerals (e.g., zinc, selenium, phosphorus, vitamin B6). This "bouquet," along with the carbohydrates in rice, can provide a boost of energy to help you cope with more, says nutritionist Lauren Manaker.

Stronger bones

Eating white rice is good for bone health because of the presence of a substance like manganese in it.

Risk of ingesting arsenic

This trace element can lead to serious health problems if consumed in large quantities frequently. Rice can contain arsenic absorbed from the soil.

Propensity to develop metabolic syndrome

Another side effect of eating rice can be an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

With these risks in mind, experts suggest that there is no need to give up white rice completely. It provides the body with a dose of nutrients and energy throughout the day. However, it is important to eat white rice in moderation and to talk to your doctor about including it in your diet if you have a chronic condition.
