Astigmatism can be hereditary
Parental astigmatism may increase the likelihood of astigmatism in children, according to ophthalmologists from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The findings are published in the journal JAMA Network Open.
Astigmatism is a visual defect in which a person sees a blurred picture (it seems to bifurcate), and his eyes quickly become fatigued, leading to headaches.
Researchers studied data from nearly 6,000 families who participated in the Hong Kong Children's Vision Study. After analysis, scientists found that pathology over 1 diopter in both parents was associated with a greater likelihood of refractive astigmatism and corneal astigmatism in the child. If astigmatism exceeded 2 diopters, the risk increased even more.
According to the scientists, children whose parents have astigmatism should have early eye examinations to detect the defect in time.
