Even short exposure to exhaust fumes impairs brain function, study claims

January 30, 2023  19:06

Just two hours of exposure to diesel exhaust alters brain function, scientists from the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria have found, Environmental Health reported.

The researchers exposed 25 healthy adults to diesel exhaust in a laboratory setting. Brain activity was measured before and after each exposure using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

The experiments showed that the exhaust caused participants to have decreased functional connectivity in vast regions of the default brain network, which plays an important role in memory and thinking. The changes in the brain were temporary, and it returned to normal after exposure. Scientists suggest that the effects may be long-lasting with continuous exposure.

Previously, altered functional connectivity in the default network was associated with cognitive decline and symptoms of depression.

The authors noted that for many decades, scientists had believed that the brain could be protected from the harmful effects of air pollution. Now it turns out that it is quite possible that exhaust fumes can impair people's thinking or ability to function.
