Scientists identified dangerous health effects for families with gas cookers in their homes

A study of air pollution in American homes has found that households with gas cookers regularly inhale unhealthy levels of nitrogen dioxide.

"I would not expect bedroom concentrations of the pollutant to exceed health standards within an hour of using a gas cooker and to remain there for hours after the cooker is turned off," said Stanford School of Sustainability professor Rob Jackson, senior author of the paper published in Science Advances.

He said pollution from gas and propane cookers is not just a problem for cooks or people working in the kitchen: it's a problem for the whole family.

Among other negative health effects, inhaling high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, or NO2, can worsen asthma attacks over time and has been linked to delayed lung development in children and early death.
