Cell Metabolism: Hot cheeks may be symptom of dangerous disease, researchers find

Researchers have found out that a person's age and diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, can be determined by the temperature of the face. The results of the research were published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Doctors studied the facial temperature of 2,800 Chinese patients aged 21-88. In older participants, the nose was cooler, whereas the area around the eyes was warmer than in younger ones. Even in case of hypertension, the cheeks were hot, while in people with metabolic disorders, including diabetes and fatty liver disease, the area around the eyes was warmer than in their peers.

Researchers asked 23 patients to perform 800 jumps with a rope every day. Two weeks later, their "thermal age" dropped by five years.

These researchers plan to find out if facial temperature is associated with heart disease and sleep disorders.

The temperature differences that the researchers found are difficult to feel by touch, so they used artificial intelligence and heat maps—which can become tools of the doctors’ work in the future.
