American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: Coffee without sugar reduces risk of diabetes

February 7, 2025  10:24

Researchers from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health have found that a cup of coffee a day can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 10%—but only if the coffee is prepared without sugar. The findings of the study were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Close to 290 thousand health workers participated in the study. They provided information about their health and diet. In their analyses, the researchers paid special attention to the amount of coffee consumed. The volunteers were also asked to specify whether they added sugar or milk to their coffee.

During the 34 years of this study, 13,281 people developed type 2 diabetes. Up to 60% of the participants preferred not to drink pure coffee. Moreover, up to 42% of the volunteers added sugar.

The analysis found that drinking one cup of unsweetened—either caffeinated or decaffeinated—coffee reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 10%, after accounting for other factors such as physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, and family history of the disease.

It found also that drinking coffee with artificial sweeteners reduced the risk of developing diabetes by 7%, while milk had no effect on this indicator.
