JAD: breakfast after 9am can worsen mental health

Researchers from the First Clinical Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University found that people who eat breakfast later than nine in the morning are 28% more likely to experience symptoms of depression. The findings are published in The Journal Of Affective Disorders (JAD).

Researchers for 11 years analyzed eating habits and almost 24 thousand adult volunteers and tracked changes in their health. Scientists recorded whether the subjects regularly had breakfast in the morning, as well as the time at which the first meal.

It turned out that men and women who ate breakfast later than nine in the morning, bad mood and mental health problems appeared almost a third more often than those who first meal ended before 8:00. It was also found that completely avoiding breakfast also had the same detrimental effect on psychological well-being and emotional background.

Researchers suggested that delaying breakfast or not eating breakfast may cause sleep problems, reduced physical mobility or weakened life motivation.
