A new study has revealed a potential way to improve cardiometabolic health: fresh mango fruit.
The study, which was published in the journal Nutrients, found that eating two cups of mangoes daily, which contain only about 100 calories, may help lower insulin concentrations and improve insulin sensitivity in overweight or obese adults with chronic low-grade inflammation.
A study conducted at the Illinois Institute of Technology involving 48 adults between the ages of 20 and 60 examined how eating fresh mango compared to a calorie-matched control food, Italian ice cream (a frozen sweetened dessert similar to sorbet), affected inflammation and insulin sensitivity in overweight or obese adults with chronic low-grade inflammation. Results showed that participants who consumed mango experienced a significant reduction in insulin resistance as measured by the Homeostasis Insulin Resistance Assessment Model of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR).
After four weeks, patients in the mango group also had significantly reduced insulin concentrations in response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) compared to the start of the study, while no change was observed in the control group.
