Translational Psychiatry: Keto Diet Reduces Depression Symptoms by 70%

October 2, 2025  12:43

Scientists from The Ohio State University have shown that following a ketogenic diet for 10–12 weeks can significantly reduce symptoms of depression. The study was published in Translational Psychiatry.

The experiment involved 24 students diagnosed with depressive disorder, 16 of whom fully completed the program. All participants continued their standard treatment — counseling or medication — while also adhering to a carefully designed low-carbohydrate diet (less than 50 grams of carbs per day, moderate protein intake, and a focus on healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, and fish).

The results were remarkable: according to self-assessments and clinical scales, depression severity decreased by approximately 70%. By the end of the study, none of the participants showed signs of moderate or severe depression. In addition, most students lost an average of 5 kilograms, improved their cognitive test performance, and saw a 32% increase in levels of BDNF — a protein essential for neuronal health.

Researchers note that the effect cannot be explained solely by weight loss or increased ketone levels in the blood. The diet’s positive impact on mood may be linked to more complex metabolic processes, including reduced inflammation and improved energy metabolism.“We see real potential here to help more people than traditional approaches can reach,”said psychiatrist Ryan Patel.
