Experts Call for Unprecedentedly Strict Measures to Curb Ultra-Processed Food Consumption

November 19, 2025  16:39

Scientists and public health experts are calling for strict and unprecedented measures against the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF), as their harmful effects on health are becoming increasingly evident.

According to a recent review published in The Lancet, a high proportion of such foods in the diet is associated with an increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, and other chronic conditions.

The authors propose several key policies: introducing front-of-pack warning labels on UPF packaging, restricting their advertising—especially advertising targeted at children—banning their sale in public institutions (such as schools and hospitals), and reducing the shelf space allocated to these products in supermarkets. These measures, researchers argue, are necessary to reduce UPF exposure and protect public health.

In addition, experts emphasize that the food industry is actively resisting such reforms by promoting weak processing standards, engaging in lobbying, and applying marketing pressure. Therefore, they urge governments to act boldly, similar to how tobacco industry regulations were strengthened in the past.
