A recent study has shown that regular consumption of orange juice alters the activity of thousands of genes in our immune cells. A significant number of these genes are involved in mechanisms that regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and control sugar metabolism.
All of these are critically important processes for long-term cardiovascular health, notes David K. Gaze, senior lecturer in chemical pathology at the University of Westminster, in a publication for The Conversation.
In the recent study, adult participants were asked to drink 500 ml of pure pasteurized orange juice every day for two months.
After 60 days, researchers found fewer inflammation-related genes—such as NAMPT, IL6, IL1B, and NLRP3, which become activated during stress, according to Euronews. The SGK1 gene, which influences the kidneys’ ability to retain sodium, also showed reduced activity. These changes are consistent with earlier research showing that regular orange juice consumption lowers blood pressure in young adults.
According to experts, the findings suggest that orange juice triggers small but significant changes in the body's regulatory systems that help dilate blood vessels, reduce inflammation, and protect heart health.
The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of hesperidin, a flavonoid found in oranges, have long been recognized. The new study shows that this natural compound positively affects processes such as high blood pressure, cholesterol balance, and sugar metabolism.
Body type also affects how the body responds to orange juice. Genes related to fat metabolism were more active in overweight participants, while inflammation-related genes showed stronger changes in lean participants.
According to a systematic analysis of 15 studies involving 639 people, regular consumption of orange juice may reduce insulin resistance and LDL cholesterol levels. Insulin resistance is a key indicator of prediabetes, and high cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
In another analysis involving overweight individuals, several weeks of daily orange juice consumption slightly reduced systolic blood pressure and increased HDL (the “good” cholesterol).
While these changes may appear small, they can have a meaningful cumulative impact on heart health over many years.
Metabolite studies revealed that orange juice influences energy utilization, intercellular communication, and inflammatory pathways. After a month of regular consumption, volunteers showed increased levels of gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids—substances associated with healthy blood pressure and lower inflammation.
In a study conducted among people with metabolic syndrome, orange juice improved endothelial function, meaning the ability of blood vessels to dilate. Improved endothelial function is associated with a reduced risk of heart attack.
Although some studies did not find significant changes in HDL and triglyceride levels, the overall trend shows that orange juice reduces inflammation, improves blood flow, and enhances markers linked to cardiovascular risk.
A study conducted at an orange juice production facility in Brazil also showed that workers had a decrease in apo-B levels—a marker reflecting cholesterol-containing particles that increase heart attack risk.
