Food That Matters: What Increases and Decreases the Risk of Stomach Cancer

January 24, 2026  10:16

New scientific evidence shows that what we eat can influence the risk of developing stomach cancer, although there are no “miracle foods” that can guarantee protection from the disease, Medical Xpress reports.

According to upper gastrointestinal surgeon Sharon Shiraga of Keck Medicine of USC, genetics remains the main risk factor, but choosing certain foods and following a healthy overall diet can help reduce the danger over time.

Experts recommend limiting the consumption of processed and preserved foods, as they often contain high levels of sugar, salt, and potentially harmful nitrites and nitrates, which epidemiological studies have linked to an increased risk of various cancers, including stomach cancer.

Instead, it is advisable to include more fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body’s cells from damage that can contribute to the development of malignant tumors.

The author notes that about half of the plate at each meal should be filled with vegetables. It is also recommended to follow a Mediterranean-style diet, emphasizing whole plant foods, healthy fats, fish, legumes, and high-quality proteins.

Another important factor is regular physical activity, which helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces overall cancer risk, since obesity itself is associated with higher rates of the disease.

Shiraga also emphasizes that excess weight — especially fat accumulation around the abdomen — intensifies hormonal and metabolic processes that increase the risk of cancer.

Researchers further advise avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, particularly beer, which has been linked to a higher risk of stomach cancer, while moderate red wine intake may even be associated with some protective effects.

Overall, while diet alone does not determine one’s fate, daily healthy eating habits — combined with an active lifestyle and weight control — can reduce the overall impact of negative factors influencing the likelihood of developing stomach cancer.
