A dietitian has explained which types of cheese are considered the healthiest, HuffPost reports.
According to dietitian Brookwell White, cheese is a source of high-quality protein and is rich in calcium, which supports bone health. It also contains B vitamins, vitamin A, zinc, and phosphorus—nutrients important for overall health.
In addition, consuming cheese may have a positive effect on dental health. It reduces acidity in the mouth and promotes remineralization of tooth enamel thanks to calcium and phosphorus.
However, the product also has drawbacks. Cheese contains a significant amount of fat, including saturated fat, excess consumption of which may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, experts recommend controlling portion sizes.
Different types of cheese vary in composition. For example, Swiss cheese contains less sodium, while cheeses made from sheep’s milk contain more protein and minerals. Goat cheese is considered a lighter option and may be easier to digest, the expert noted.
White also added that aged cheeses are often better tolerated by people with lactose intolerance, as their lactose content decreases during the production process.
The expert advises not to eliminate cheese entirely, but to consume it in moderation, adding small portions to main dishes—for example, to salads, soups, or vegetables.
