Oranges vs. Liver Disease: Effect Turned Out Weaker Than Scientists Expected

Researchers have examined how daily consumption of Naveline oranges affects blood markers in people with MASLD—a liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction, excess weight, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

In the study, published in the journal Nutrients, 60 participants took part. For four weeks, one group ate 400 grams of oranges daily, while the other group did not consume them. All participants were given identical dietary recommendations and were asked to avoid alcohol and other polyphenol-rich foods to prevent interference with the results.

Scientists analyzed a wide range of blood lipids and how they relate to metabolism, focusing in particular on cholesterol, fatty acids, and their ratios, which can reflect inflammatory processes in the body.

The results were cautious: no statistically significant changes were observed. In other words, it cannot be concluded that oranges clearly improved blood markers or liver function.

However, researchers did note some weak trends. In the orange-consuming group, there was a slight reduction in “harmful” fatty acids and a small shift toward a more anti-inflammatory profile. Some changes were also observed in fatty acid ratios related to HDL (“good” cholesterol), but these shifts were too small to draw firm conclusions.

In simple terms, some indicators looked slightly better, but the effect was weak and not statistically proven.

The authors emphasize that this was a pilot study. It does not demonstrate a therapeutic effect of oranges, but it provides a basis for further research into how citrus fruits and their natural compounds may influence fat metabolism and inflammation in the body.
