Scientists from Zhejiang University (China) have discovered that theabrownin, a compound found in Pu-erh tea, can protect the intestines from inflammation and help restore the protective functions of the mucosal lining. The research findings were published in the journal Food & Function (F&F).
Theabrownin is a compound formed during the fermentation process of Pu-erh—a prolonged microbiological "maturation" of tea leaves during which bioactive substances are produced.
In an experiment involving mice with an induced model of ulcerative colitis—a chronic inflammatory bowel disease—the administration of theabrownin led to a reduction in the severity of mucosal damage, decreased weight loss, and an overall improvement in the animals' condition.
The researchers attribute this effect to the restoration of the intestinal barrier function—the ability of the mucosal lining to prevent the penetration of pathogens and toxins. Specifically, it was shown that theabrownin activates cells that produce mucus, which forms a protective layer on the surface of the intestinal wall.
Additionally, the substance influenced the gut microbiota—the collection of microorganisms that play a key role in metabolism and immune defense. Under its influence, the proportion of bacteria associated with normal intestinal function increased, while the number of microorganisms linked to inflammatory processes decreased.
According to the scientists, theabrownin may be considered a promising component of functional nutrition for humans. However, the study is preclinical in nature, and further experiments are necessary to confirm its effectiveness in humans.
