Aging Cell: A Four-Week Dietary Adjustment Affects Markers of Biological Aging in Older Adults

New findings from researchers suggest that even very short-term dietary changes can noticeably influence indicators of the body’s biological aging.

The study results were published in the journal Aging Cell.

The study, conducted by scientists at University of Sydney, involved older adults who followed different dietary patterns for four weeks, with varying proportions of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

At the end of the experiment, some participants showed a reduction in so-called biological age — a measure that reflects the body’s functional state and is calculated using a set of biomarkers, including indicators of inflammation, metabolism, and cardiovascular function.

The most pronounced changes were observed in participants who reduced fat intake or lowered the proportion of animal protein in their diets. In some groups, improvements in combined aging-related biomarkers were detected just one month after the intervention began.

Meanwhile, the control group, which maintained their usual diet, showed little to no change.

The researchers emphasize that these are preliminary findings and observed biological shifts rather than proven “rejuvenation” of the body. It remains unclear whether such effects persist over the long term or lead to a reduced risk of age-related diseases.
