"The golden age of antibiotics" comes to an end

January 13, 2014  10:21

Very soon the "golden age" of antibiotics can end according to British scientists.

Scientists forecast that antibiotics will reach their maximum effect in 10 years, after which the biologists will have to find new means to fight disease-causing bacteria, since the microorganisms annually actively evolve and become more resistant to antibiotics, writes The Daily Mail.

The loss of efficacy of these drugs is associated with the fact that today many doctors prescribe antibiotics to patients unnecessarily. Bacteria, thus, become more able to adapt to their action. Today the scientists do not deny the fact that bacterial resistance to antibiotics continues to increase gradually.

According to the British professor Jeremy Farrer, today, when even ordinary viral colds sometimes are treated with antibiotics, there is nothing surprising that the most minor bacterial infections over time can become deadly.
