You may often ignore the symptoms of low blood pressure. A proper diet can help you maintain your blood pressure within the normal range. Here are some tips by nutritionist Urvashi Sawhney.

Eat frequent meals: Postprandial hypotension or dizziness after having a meal is common in people who suffer from low blood pressure, so it is best to avoid large meals. Frequently eating small meals may help reduce the incidence of low blood pressure after your meals. Eating small, frequent meals will also encourage better digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Cut down on carbohydrates: Limit carbohydrates you consume such as potatoes, pasta and rice. These foods can cause a sudden spike in your blood sugar levels which can affect your blood pressure as well. Studies have shown that decreasing carbohydrate content in food can help reduce systolic blood pressure and shorter the duration of postprandial hypotension. So eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables. You must have these foods if you are suffering from low blood pressure.

Drink a lot of water: Hydrating your body means helping eradicate one symptom of low blood pressure – dehydration. Drinking adequate water keeps the fluid levels in your body up and contributes to boosting circulation.

Monitor your salt intake: Going overboard with your salt could significantly increase your risk for high blood pressure. So to deal with low blood pressure, be on track with your salt intake and ensure that you consume your 2 to 3 mg of recommended salt through your diet.

Go for caffeinated beverages once a while: Caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee are known to increase the blood pressure levels temporarily. The exact cause is not known but if you suffer from low blood pressure frequently, drink a cup of black coffee in the morning or with meals. However, it is always better to consult your doctor before doing so.

Avoid alcohol: Alcohol may dehydrate you and lower your blood pressure. Remember alcohol may have its effects even if you are drinking in moderation. Here’s all you need to know about alcohol abuse.
