Excessive salt intake contributes to weight gain, experts say

Excessive salt intake contributes to weight gain, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation suggests.

The study says most Americans intake 50% more salt than recommended on daily basis, and this can be the cause of weight gain.

Excessive salt intake is to some extent related to unhealthy food habits. People who eat much salt also regularly eat such products as smoked meat, sausages, salted nuts, processed cheeses. This also contributes to weight gain.

Packaged foods, frozen dinners, crackers and croutons also contain too much salt.

Experts believe that salt promotes weight gain by affecting the intestines. Changes in the intestinal microflora affect metabolic processes and lead to an increase in fat.
