Can diabetes be prevented? Endocrinologists' opinion

November 15, 2019  20:29

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most dangerous diseases of our time: more than 415 million people aged 20 to 79 suffer from diabetes globally, and half of them still do not know about it. Without treatment and proper monitoring of blood glucose levels, diabetes leads to serious problems, including blindness, cardiovascular disease, and so on.

It is impossible to cure diabetes today, but its development can be prevented. The head of the city endocrinology clinic Anush Buniatyan recommends people with diabetes to think about diabetes prevention, as the hereditary predisposition plays an important role here.

It is recommended first of all to pay attention to nutrition: this, according to a specialist, does not mean at all that you need to adhere to any diets - in fact, you just need to give preference to a healthy diet, when vegetables and fruits occupy a large place. But it is advisable to refuse from an excessive amount of salt, sugar and other fast carbohydrates.

The specialist also recommends not to neglect physical exercises, try to walk a lot during the day, and do not smoke. It is equally important to try to keep weight within the normal range, as diabetes and obesity often go hand in hand.

All of the above tips are pretty simple, and if you follow them, you can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, the problem is that many people neglect these simple rules, which negatively affects their state of health and makes them more vulnerable to diabetes and a number of other diseases.
