New drug shows promising results against COVID-19

March 8, 2021  10:43

Merck & Co. Pharmaceutical Company and US Laboratory have announced promising results in new trials of a new drug against COVID-19. The drug helps to reduce the patient's viral load, BusinessWire reported.

“At a time where there is unmet need for antiviral treatments against SARS-CoV-2, we are encouraged by these preliminary data” said Dr. Wendy Painter, Chief Medical Officer of Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

Merck & Co. stopped working on two candidate coronavirus vaccines in January, but continued research into two drugs to treat coronavirus, including a drug called Molnupiravir, developed in collaboration with Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

This drug significantly reduced the viral load of patients after 5 days of treatment. The second phase of trials of the new drug was carried out among 202 non-hospitalized people with symptoms of Covid-19. None of the four reported adverse events were related to the use of this drug, Ridgeback said.

Merck is also working on another oral drug for Covid-19 treatment called MK-711. Preliminary results of clinical trials of the drug show a more than 50% reduction in the risk of death or respiratory disease in patients hospitalized with moderate to severe COVID-19.
