The Lancet: a low-carb soft diet is effective and safe for diabetics

December 22, 2023  16:50

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden found that a moderately reduced carbohydrate diet was effective in lowering blood sugar levels in diabetics. results published In The Lancet.

50 people with type 1 diabetes, with an average age of 48, participated in the experiment. All participants had high blood sugar and insulin levels. All volunteers also used insulin pump and injection therapy. Subjects were divided into two groups. The first group had to follow a diet in which 50% of their calories consisted of carbohydrates for 16 weeks. For the second group, carbohydrates were reduced to 30% of total calories (soft low-carb diet).

The diet of the participants in the first and second groups was balanced to meet their vitamin, mineral and fiber needs. All subjects consumed vegetables, fruits, nuts and legumes. Participants’ blood sugar levels were measured several times a day, every day throughout the study.

The results showed that following a bland, low-carb diet allowed participants to stay in the so-called target range for longer, meaning they maintained blood sugar levels that are normal for a person with type 1 diabetes. Participants who ate 50% of their calories from carbohydrates stayed within the target range for less than 68 minutes. Additionally, the low-carb diet had no adverse effects on the volunteers’ health. Participants in the trial did not report any deterioration in their health or changes in their blood pressure levels.

The researchers noted that their discovery could contribute to the development of new nutritional strategies for diabetic patients. Scientists also emphasized that it is not recommended to reduce carbohydrates too much, which are important for the normal functioning of the body.

Previous scientists developed A new drug for the treatment of atherosclerosis.
