IJC: four cups of coffee a day reduces risk of developing bowel cancer

March 25, 2024  18:40

A study by scientists from Imperial College London has found that people suffering from bowel cancer who consume two to four cups of coffee a day are significantly less likely to relapse. The scientists' work was presented in the International Journal of Cancer (IJC).

The authors of the study analysed data from 1719 patients with stage one, two and three colorectal cancer. The results showed that consuming more than four cups of coffee a day, compared to less than two cups, was associated with a 32% reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence.

In addition, the association between coffee consumption and all-cause mortality was found to be non-linear. The lowest risk of death was observed when four cups of coffee per day were consumed.

However, the scientists note that more research is needed to fully understand the effect of coffee on bowel cancer prognosis. The results of this study may serve as a basis for further research in this area.
