NutritHealth: soda and alcohol increase the risk of hair loss

September 11, 2025  17:33

Regular consumption of sweet carbonated drinks and alcohol increases the risk of hair loss, while foods containing iron and vitamin D protect against baldness. This was shown by a study published in the journal Nutrition and Health (NutritHealth).

Scientists came to this conclusion as a result of a meta-analysis of 17 previously published scientific papers. These papers assessed the health and dietary characteristics of 61,332 people from the US, Europe, and Asia. Women accounted for 97% of the total number of subjects.

The analysis showed that higher levels of vitamin D and iron in the diet were associated with a lower likelihood of alopecia and effective hair growth. Conversely, alcohol and sweetened beverage consumption was more often accompanied by hair loss and early graying.

The researchers note that consumption of soy products and cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cabbage, was associated with reduced hair loss. A number of complex supplements also had a positive effect, but the quality of some of the clinical trials was found to be moderate or low.

The authors emphasize that these are associations, not direct cause-and-effect relationships, since most of the studies were observational and used different methods to assess nutrition and hair condition.

However, experts believe that when treating hair loss complaints, it makes sense to check vitamin D and ferritin (an indicator of iron stores) levels, correct any deficiencies found, and limit the consumption of sugary drinks and alcohol. In their opinion, this approach can be a simple and affordable strategy for maintaining healthy hair, along with basic dermatological therapy.
