Blueberry Extract May Ease Gestational Diabetes via Gut Microbiota

Blueberry extract may reduce the manifestations of gestational diabetes, scientists have concluded in a study published in the journal Food & Function (F&F). The research showed that berry components affect metabolism through several biological mechanisms at the same time.

What is gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism that develops during pregnancy and is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. It usually resolves after childbirth, but it can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby.

How the study was conducted

In an animal experiment, scientists induced a model of gestational diabetes using a high-fat diet and added blueberry extract rich in anthocyanins to the diet. As a result, the animals showed reduced blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, inflammation, and disturbances in lipid metabolism.

Possible mechanism of action: microbiota and hormones

The analysis showed that the effect is linked to changes in the gut microbiota: the abundance of beneficial bacteria increased, including Lactobacillus. This was accompanied by a restructuring of bile acid metabolism and activation of signaling pathways that affect production of the GLP-1 hormone, which helps regulate blood sugar levels.

What this means in practice

The authors note that the findings reveal a more complex mechanism of berry action—not only due to antioxidants, but also through effects on the microbiota and hormonal processes. In the future, this could be used when developing dietary recommendations for the prevention and management of gestational diabetes, but additional studies are needed to confirm the effect in humans.
